The Formation of Composite Hypotheses in Diagnostic Problem Solving: An Exercise in Synthetic Reasoning
نویسنده
چکیده
The INTERNIST system, which is a computerbased diagnostic problem solver having Internal Medicine as i t s domain of discourse, employs a novel attention focusing heurist ic in order to deal sequentially with the component parts of a complex c l in ica l problem. The strategy of sequential problem formation and solution has proved to be effect ive in sorting out the complexi t ies and rendering a correct diagnosis in the great majority of c l in ica l cases tested. Experience with the system suggests, however, that many aspects of the search process could be s ign i f icant ly enhanced if it were possible to attend to the various component problems and their interrelationships simultaneously. Recent work on a successor system has been directed towards the development of strategies for the synthesis and analysis of composite hypotheses, which may be expected to yield more rapid convergence to the correct conclusion in many cases, and in at least some cases to prevent missed diagnoses.

Conceptual Combination as Theory Formation
Conceptual combination is an instance of synthetic problem solving comparable to design or planning. This work reviews evidence supporting the view that the result of such a synthesis has much in common with theory formation. Similar to theory formation inference in conceptual combination can be modeled by using abduction as the principal mechanism to generate hypotheses. However, abduction in ...

Introduction: As a cognitive activity, the process of creative problem solving plays a crucial role in architectural design. The design method includes the emergence, evolution, and transformation of ideas and the formation of concepts. Explaining the most important influential components of creativity and contestability of design raises these concepts in achieving each one of the approaches. T...
متن کاملUse of Current Explanations in Multicausal Abductive Reasoning Use of Current Explanations in Multicausal Abductive Reasoning
In multicausal abductive tasks a person must explain some findings by assembling a composite hypothesis that consists of one or more elementary hypotheses. If there are n elementary hypotheses, there can be up to 2 composite hypotheses. To constrain the search for hypotheses to explain a new observation, people sometimes use their current explanation—the previous evidence and their present comp...
